The Little Read is an elementary education community-wide reading initiative of Lenoir-Rhyne College’s Visiting Writers Series “In Their Own Words.” It is designed to provide quality literature for classroom use and to involve in meaningful ways parents and other community members in the educational process.
The mission of The Little Read is to make reading come alive to elementary school children (and their parents) in Catawba County by organizing special reading and cultural programs in conjunction with the appearance of a major children’s author.
This year, the visiting author is Bruce Lansky and the target audience is second grade teachers and students. As part of the partnership with LRU and HPS, our second graders will receive a copy of the book, If Pigs Could Fly. In addition to the books, our teachers will recieve curriculum resources to support their instruction.
The folders below include the curricular support materials that have been written and/or compiled by elementary education students and professors at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina for the Little Read during the 2008-2009 academic year, as a part of their coursework. This collection of resources and materials designed for use with If Pigs Could Fly and Other Deep Thoughts, will be used to support instruction before, during and after poet Bruce Lansky’s visit this spring.
To further extend student engagement with the Little Read, second grade students are encouraged to participate in a poetry contest. Three winners from each school will recieve a special award and recognition on Saturday, April 4th at LRU. For further details on the poetry contest, check out the document below.
