 | | | Hickory Public Schools preschool programs at Jenkins, Longview, Oakwood, Southwest, and Viewmont elementary schools and Hickory High School will accept registration for the 2010-2011 school year on Monday, March 1st through Friday, March 5th, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Hickory Public Schools Preschool Office. The preschool office is located at Catawba Valley High School, 409 8th Avenue N. E., Hickory, at the end of the school building near the LRU athletic fields. Applications will also be taken at the Welcome Center for families needing a translator. A limited number of spaces are available at each location. A lottery drawing will determine which children are given a preschool space. Parents will receive a letter telling them if their child has been accepted or not. Spaces are also available for children determined to be academically at risk at no cost. A developmental screening will determine the children who are eligible for these spaces. Acceptance/waiting list notifications will be mailed by April 20th. Teachers at each school will schedule a screening time for each applicant that has been accepted. HPS preschools are developmental, inclusive classrooms taught by certified teachers. Each classroom maintains a 1:6 adult: child ratio. Hours at each site are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Hickory High, Jenkins, and Viewmont offer limited slots for before and after school care (7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Preschools follow the regular Hickory Public School calendar. The age requirement to attend the HPS preschools coincides with the North Carolina age requirements for children to begin kindergarten. Children must be 2 years old by August 31, 2010 to enroll in Hickory High and 3 years by August 31, 2010 to enroll in the other preschool programs. They will be assisted by students from Hayes School. The NV eighth grade jazz band will also perform. The first Blues Night was made possible by a grant from the Grassroots Arts Program administered by the Arts Council of the Catawba Valley through the NC Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

 | | | Football Game: HHS Red Tornadoes vs St. Stephens Indians The Hickory High Alumni Association will be holding its annual Homecoming Barbecue at the school on Friday, October 23, 2009 from 4:30 – 7:30 pm. Shell’s BBQ is sponsoring the event and will be serving plates and sandwiches. This is the 4th Annual BBQ and is a great way to get an early parking space, have dinner, hear music and meet friends before the ballgame. All profits are used for academic needs at the high school and the event is for alumni and friends (everyone is invited)! This year will be more special as there are 4 former classes holding reunions in conjunction with the BBQ. They are the classes of 1974, 1979, 1989 & 1999. (There may be others as well.) Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling the 828-221-2299 phone number or at the door. Curb service will also be available!

 | | | The free concert will be held at 2 pm at Northview Middle School and will feature the debut of the ninety member HPS Sixth Grade Strings, the Northview and Grandview Seventh and Eighth Grade Orchestras and the eighty three member Hickory High School Orchestra. The concert allows students, parents and the public to hear the whole HPS orchestra program from beginners to the advanced HHS Orchestra. The Hickory String Program is the only program offering school string instruction in Catawba County providing instruction in violin, viola, cello and bass to 263 children in grades six through twelve. The HHS Orchestra has earned superior ratings at State Contest Festival for 32 consecutive years and has performed at Carnegie Hall twice. The high school students performed at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC last May as part of the 2009 Haydn Festival. Students from the program have earned nearly half a million dollars in college music scholarships and attended some of Ameria's most prestigious music schools. This year six students from the HHS Orchestra will be performing with the NC All-State High School Orchestra-violinist Kelly Boyd, violist Taylor Yount, cellists Dylan Hefner and Daniel McCallum and bassists William Bewley and William Burns.

All staff at the Administrative Services building, as well as principals, counselors, and office staff at the schools, will work Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. All HPS offices and buildings will be closed on Fridays, except for facilities previously scheduled for use by community partners.
