Putting a Face to the Numbers


Administrators at Hickory Public Schools are immersed in a critical study of the district’s achievement scores. The study is referred to as the HPS Data Dialogue.

“It’s important that we put a face to the scores and personalize our teaching,” said Dr. Robbie Adell, HPS superintendent.  “As part of the district plan, the administrative team is closely charting visits to every school where principals are developing school-wide Data Walls (charts) designed to monitor student achievement and growth,” he said.

“We are fortunate that Shawn Clemons, director of accountability, has created detailed spread sheets for each of the nine schools—providing tools to help build a community of learning,” said Adell. “The collaboration will support and guide teachers with facilitation and the Data Walls call for frequent assessment of student achievement.”

During the most recent Data Dialogue for HPS middle and high school administrators, Dr. Adell and Dr. Denise Patterson, chief academic officer, led the session with the following questions (created by DuFour's Professional Learning Communities) at the center of the dialogue: What do students need to know and be able to do? How will we know when they have learned it? What will we do when they haven’t learned it? What will we do when they already know it?

Additionally, Clemons reviewed subject assessment including science, social studies, and math.  Through each school’s development of Data Walls, the administrative team will guide the principals to plan interventions for students as they project performance goals set to increase proficiency.

HPS team members joining the Data Dialogue included Stephanie Dischiavi, principal of Northview Middle, Aaron Joplin, principal of Grandview Middle, Caroline Lovette, principal of Hickory Career & Arts Magnet High (HCAM), Ryan McCreary, principal of Hickory High, Angela Simmons, director of student services, Dr. Tim Sims, director of federal programs, Amanda Byrd, director of exceptional children, Tonya Scott, curriculum specialist and Terri Hall, instructional technology specialist.

The Data Dialogue is an HPS on-going initiative with frequent follow-up sessions already scheduled on the district’s calendar.

“The HPS leadership team will be in schools each week,” said Dr. Adell, “as we collaborate to personalize learning and chart the growth of every student. We are here to provide support to our teachers and to help them assess the needs of all students who attend Hickory Public Schools.”
