Holiday Greetings

Dozens of seasonal entries recently made it to the Superintendent’s desk at Hickory Public Schools. How does the Superintendent pick just one?

“All of the entries were excellent!” said Dr. Robbie Adell, HPS superintendent. “The enormous talent displayed by our students made this selection process both a joy and a challenge. The students at Hickory Public Schools are very talented and their entries showcased their visual artistic abilities,” he said.

Each of the cards represented something meaningful to the children—from colorful ornaments and bright Christmas trees – to warm mittens and Santa arriving on rooftops with his reindeer

Rather than choosing just one illustration this year, Dr. Adell selected seven—with all seven illustrations printed in color on the HPS 2015 holiday card mailed to community supporters and school districts across North Carolina.

The  cover photo, illustrated by Mira Melton, 8th grade student at Grandview Middle, reflects a reindeer giving a helpful lift to a mouse (both sporting red scarves)—as they exhibit teamwork in decorating a tree near the North Pole.

Inside the card, the remaining six illustrations make for a beautiful spread once the card is opened:

Emma Kahill, 4th grade student at Jenkins Elementary, illustrated colorful details with a visit from Santa and his reindeer.

Sage Makenzie Boston, a 3rd grade student at Southwest Elementary, shared a beautiful Christmas tree standing tall among blue snowflakes.

A colorful Christmas ornament, that looks to be floating in water, was illustrated by Toby Schwiebert, a 3rd grade student at Viewmont Elementary.

Mittens with a warm drink and snowflakes served as the theme for the illustration by Rikaija Feimster, a 5th grade student at Longview Elementary School.

Mebane White, a 4th grade student at Oakwood Elementary, shared a beautiful Christmas tree with nearby presents and stockings.

And Evelyn Vega, an 8th grade student at Northview Middle, shared a digitally enhanced illustration with a printed message wishing everyone “Joyful Holidays.”

The seven artists included in this year’s HPS district card will all be recognized at an upcoming meeting of the HPS Board of Education.
