Kindergarten students at Oakwood Elementary School were squirming with excitement as the “men in blue” from the Hickory Police Department recently visited their classrooms.

It didn’t take long for the students to affirm the notion that the officers were indeed their friends.  Smiles, handshakes and hugs were all part of the morning exchange.

Each of the three visiting police officers, including Captain Vidal Sipe, Lt. Scott Hildebrand, and MPO John Wienbrock,  read a story to the students followed by an opportunity to teach the children about practicing “safety” in the community.

Little hands went up in the air—with curious questions from nearly every child.  At the close of the visit, the kindergarteners received a wristband and kid-friendly publications.

As the officers left the classrooms,  every child and teacher expressed words of thanks to the police officers in appreciation of their dedication to Hickory Public Schools and the Hickory community.
