Hickory’s Eckard to play

lacrosse for Mars Hill

Victoria Eckard is heading to Mars Hill University in August to play lacrosse.

An athlete her entire life, lacrosse is relatively new since she took up the sport during her junior year at Hickory High.

An aggressive and lockdown defense player, Victoria’s years of playing basketball helped to make the athletic transition.  “I was the point guard on varsity basketball all four years of high school,” said Eckard. “I also played soccer my sophomore year but had to quit because lacrosse was in the same season.”

Attending MHU on both an academic and athletic scholarship, Eckard will soon receive her training packet and start her lacrosse camp at the end of June. Training combined with her experience and dedication at Hickory High should contribute to a solid performance at MHU—as she received All Conference this year. “My proudest moment was against Hough High this year where I used my defense to steal and I went down field and scored!” said Eckard.

“My two lacrosse coaches, Coach Bailey and Coach Farrah, taught me to always push hard and be the best player I can be,” said Eckard. “I also want to thank my basketball coach for all four years--Coach Barbara Helms. She was inspirational!”

"Victoria's background in basketball gave her a great foundation to be a natural in lacrosse,” said Coach Bailey. “Her footwork and vision of the field was impeccable given her short time playing the sport.

"Victoria's competitive nature isn't something that can be taught and she brought a winning atmosphere to our team, which translated into us making the second round of state playoffs in just our second year,” said Coach Bailey.

With the intent of majoring in criminology, Eckard hopes to eventually work with National Security Agency (NSA) or the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The daughter of Michael Eckard and Nilda Bozan, Victoria Eckard credits her father for her athletic success. “He pushed me to work hard. When I was little, we would go to the Hickory High track to run. He had me running hills and pushing/pulling a weight sled,” said Eckard.

Eckard states that attending MHU is bitter-sweet. “I will miss my friends the most. I’ve made some amazing friends and I know I could call on them anytime,” said Eckard.

“But Mars Hill University is a beautiful campus with a close-knit community. It’s near Asheville and there’s always something going on. I’m looking forward to the future and the adventures and challenges it will bring!” said Eckard.

Congratulations, Victoria Eckard!
