March 12, 2018

Dear HPS Family Members:

We have received word that a national “walkout” is scheduled to take place at schools on March 14 and April 20.  Both walkouts are planned in protest of gun violence.

The walkout on March 14 is scheduled for 10:00 am (during each time zone) and to last for 17 minutes, one minute in memory of each victim who died in the school shooting last month at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.  The April 20 walkout is scheduled on the 19th anniversary of the Columbine shooting. We do not have full details on the April 20th walkout.

Hickory Public Schools is not encouraging nor prohibiting the walkout on March 14, 2018.  If students choose to participate, each school administrator will select a place for students to assemble on the school campus. However, if a student chooses to leave the school campus (beyond the administrator’s designated location for gathering), the student will be counted as absent.  HPS can only provide supervision for those students who congregate in one area with supervision from school administrators.

It is very important that you discuss the above guidelines with your children. Thank you for your support as Hickory Public Schools continues to place the safety of students as the number one priority.

Respectfully,

Dr. Robbie Adell

Superintendent

Hickory Public Schools
