plaque united wayHickory Public Schools is honored to announce the district's recognition by the North Carolina United Way.

Nominated by the Catawba County United Way for the Spirit of NC Award for Campaign Excellence, HPS was invited to receive the award during a state conference recently held in Pinehurst. Beverly Snowden, HPS director of communications and campaign chair, attended the event, accepting the award on behalf of the district.

Snowden was also invited to serve as one of six guest speakers--addressing "Best Practices" for campaigns across NC.  Her remarks represented the theme "Giving from the Soul" and touched on various district initiatives and activities led by staff and students, including The HPS Kindness Project, the outreach to furry victims of Hurricane Florence,  the partnerships with businesses and community churches, and special activities held at each of the district's nine schools. A powerpoint and video accompanied the presentation.

During the final awards banquet, following the presentation of the Spirit of NC Awards, the NC United Way also surprised five organizations with the Excellence in Community Spirit Award-- with HPS announced as one of the five winners!

According to Snowden, who prepared the nomination documents for entry with the state-wide competition, recognition must be given to the nine representatives for the nine schools, including:  Cindy Clark (Grandview Middle),  Erin Sigmon (Southwest Primary), Denise Knowles (Viewmont Elementary), Mary Rose Grimes (Jenkins Elementary), Heather Lankford (Hickory High), Dr. Tashna Morris (Viewmont Middle), Mary Lee Tosky (HCAM), Michelle Gilleland (Longview Elementary), and Hillary Simmons (Oakwood Elementary). "These school leaders did a great job and deserve much of the credit for these state awards!" said Snowden. In addition, all of the HPS employees who gave from their heart & soul--was certainly key to the growth in the HPS campaign.

Hickory Public Schools appreciates the support from the Catawba County United Way and the organization's Executive Director, Jennie Connor and her team of dedicated employees.

Congratulations to Hickory Public Schools for the recognition of service to others through the Spirit of North Carolina Award and the NC Excellence in Community Spirit Award!
