HPS teacher achieves

National Certification

Brenda Rohr, a teacher with Hickory Public Schools, recently achieved National Board Certification, an advanced teaching credential. She was recently recognized by the HPS Board of Education and HPS Superintendent, Dr. Robbie Adell, during a board meeting held at Hickory City Hall.

National Board Certification is part of the growing education reform movement designed to advance student learning, improve teaching while enhancing schools. District and state officials, from across the nation, know “National Board Certified Teachers” make a positive difference in student learning. They also know National Board Certified Teachers are powerful teacher leaders who help advance agendas for school improvement.

National Board Certification is achieved upon successful completion of a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize effective and accomplished teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do. Teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met high standards through study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review.

Brenda Rohr has served in education for more than five years with the current school year as her fourth year teaching first grade at Oakwood Elementary School.

Born and raised in Killeen, Texas, Rohr earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish form the University of Houston and later earned her teacher certification in Early Childhood, Elementary Education.  She is also certificated as an English as Second Language instructor. Rohr aspires to earn a master’s degree in school administration.

While working on her National Board Certification for the past year—literacy served as Rohr’s focus area. She stated that completing the National Boards has made her more appreciative of the educational process in its entirety; particularly the importance of proper lesson planning and the evaluation of student needs.

Brenda Rohr credits inspiring mentors during her years in education, including her mother-in-law, Lorane Rohr (retired EC Director for Hickory Public Schools), Dr. Jennifer Griffin, Mrs. Sam Laws, and her current principal, Ms. Terry Ashley.  Rohr stated that all of these women represent the necessary work ethic, knowledge and compassion that collectively contribute to leadership in the education profession.

Mrs. Rohr believes the greatest reward in being an educator is the positive impact that one can have on children. “You can’t fix every problem, nor can you overcome every constraint; however, it’s rewarding to know that you did everything possible to provide each child the best opportunity to succeed in the classroom,” said Rohr.

When not teaching or working on lesson plans, Mrs. Rohr enjoys time with her husband, Steven, and their English bulldog, Toby.

Congratulations!
