Summer is not always about the beach or the latest video game. Many students use this time to catch up on pleasure reading, spend time with friends and relatives, take on summer employment, and sleep!

For five teens from Hickory High, their summer highlight is spending time at the NC Governor’s School...where students, who are among the best and brightest, gather for the love of learning and the joy of creativity.

There are no grades or tests at the Governor’s School, and the environment offers a synergy of intellectual curiosity that fuels the exploration of the latest ideas in various disciplines.

The HHS students, including Darian Shekinah Abernathy, Pamela Nelson Fish, Maggie Elizabeth Howe, Caileigh Grace Ryan and Sophie Jane Toy Sauer—are immersed in areas of study that parallel with personal interests and talents. The programs are offered at two locations – Governor’s School East at Meredith College in Raleigh and Governor’s School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem.

Darian Abernathy, the daughter of the (late) Frank and Tami Abernathy is studying choral music at Meredith College. A participant in the Beta Club, Student Council, DECA, Juniorettes and French Club, Abernathy also enjoys playing basketball and lacrosse, cheering, and performing with school drama productions.

Pamela (Pammy) Fish, the daughter of John and Cissy Fish, is studying natural sciences at Salem College. She is active with the Beta Club, Juniorettes, National Honors Society, Science National Honors Society, and Mu Alpha Theta. Fish is active with CVYSA club soccer and assists the girls’ basketball team at St. Stephens Lutheran School.

Maggie Howe, the daughter of Kerri and LeRoy Howe is studying dance at Salem College. Howe is active with the Beta Club, National Honors Society, National Science Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta and DECA. She also created (and teaches) an after-school, hip-hop dance program at Jenkins Elementary called “Maggie’s Crew.”

Caileigh Ryan, the daughter of Frank and Mary Ryan, is studying English at Meredith College. Ryan is active with the HHS Beta Club, Key Club and spends much of her extra-curricular time with Hickory High’s winter and spring track, as well as cross country.

Sophie Sauer, the daughter of Nancy Toy and Carl Sauer, is studying choral music at Salem College. At Hickory High, she is involved with the choral program, BETA Club, Interact, French Club and the Quiz Bowl. During after-school hours, Sauer studies voice, piano and banjo.

The Governor's School of North Carolina integrates academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses into the summer program. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline. The program is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in selected performing/visual arts areas. Acceptance to the NC Governor’s School is through a competitive application process.
