Dear Parents,
You and I have worked very hard with your child this year to make great progress in their reading. It has definitely been a team effort.
It is important for me to explain how easy it is for children to regress in their reading over the summer. It is natural for any of us to slide back when we stop doing a skill (like running, weight-lifting, dieting). This happens with reading also, especially when one is still learning and has not mastered the skill. So, if your child stops reading over the summer, we will all be repeating many of the same books upon starting school. Your child’s reading is his most precious educational skill and helps him with all other subjects. Please help keep your child reading!
You can go to the local library and check out books. Your child would find it cool to receive his own library card. You can purchase inexpensive books or read books from home. The important thing is to make a daily plan of 15-20 minutes and stick to it. I will be sending home reading logs for your child’s summer reading, and will reward them for their effort when school returns. Your child cannot afford to go backwards, so please have him involved in reading this summer. I look forward to our return to reading in August and your child’s continued progress. I appreciate your teaming up with me to make your child a reader.
Sincerely,
Teresa Barrow
