|   |   | BATTLE OF THE BOOKS |
Battle of the Books - The North Carolina School Library Media Association – NCSLMA sponsors Battle of the Books. This program is for middle school students. Students at participating schools read books from al ist established by the state Battle of the Books Committee, and then compete in quiz-bowl-style tournaments to test their knowledge of these books.
At Northview, the BOTB team will meet at the beginning of the year for initial meetings to make sure everyone is reading all of the books on the list. The team will then meet on a regular basis during the winter & spring to prepare for the BOTB competitions.

Congratulations to Aimee Sigmon's student Jordan Carpenter who won first place in the Elks Essay contest for the 6th grade group. Our student will advance to district level.

|   |   | FITNESS CLUB |
We are staring a fitness club at Northview Middle School on Feb. 28th. Club will be every Tuesday after school until 3:30. Students can participate any Tuesday they are able to stay, it is not necessary to stay every week. The club will be going with a teacher/adult sponsor to the paved walking track behind Mt. Olive Church. This will be a running/walking club discussing and practicing fitness, health & nutrition.

- All games will be played during Hawk Fest - Teams must be made up of students from the SAME GRADE LEVEL - Boys and girls ARE allowed to be on the same team - You may only be on ONE TEAM PER SPORT, but you may play in each tournament

Hawk Singers - This is a singing performance group. This group meets after school 3 – 4 times monthly. Hawks Singers will be made up of no less than 6 but no more than 16 members (special exceptions could be made at the director’s discretion). Members must be registered students of Northview Middle School. During rehearsals, vocal & performance techniques are taught and explored. Students learn advanced level music as well as modern pieces for performances at, but not limited to, school sponsored functions. All performances must be approved by Northview Middle School and/or Hickory Public Schools.

Eligible Students: 6th, 7th, & 8th grade students who audition and volunteer to attend rehearsals
Meetings: After school, 3 – 4 times per month

International Club - Meetings of the International Club will be held the 4th Monday of the month from 2:30 – 3:30 pm. At the meetings, we become more knowledgeable about the world around us by “traveling” to different countries. We have speakers who have lived in the country we are visiting each meeting. They teach us about the culture, history, lifestyle, education, language and other things about their country. Students use technology to communicate with other students around the world through e-pals and Skype.

THE INTERNATIONAL CLUB is now sponsoring a school-wide collection of Coke Cola Rewards points to earn art and athletic supplies for our school as well as donating to help military families, supporting a Hispanic Scholarship fund, and much more. You can help by bringing in your Coke, Sprite, Minute Maid, and Mellow Yellow bottle caps to Mrs. Ohlendorf’s room. These rewards points are also on 12-pack cartons. Jr. Beta Club - The National Beta Club is the largest independent, non-profit, educational your organization in America. Since 1934, the National Beta Club has awarded students national recognition for their high academic achievement while equipping them to be the leaders of tomorrow. Following are the core elements of the Junior Beta Club:
Achievement-Recognizing and honoring high academic achievement Character-Preparing young people for life and empowering them to be successful Leadership-Developing the leaders of tomorrow Service-Demonstrating our motto “Let Us Lead By Serving Others” Students will be invited to induction of the Jr. Beta Club. They must maintain A’s and B’s in all classes. Students must demonstrate good character by following the school code of conduct and must complete 4 approved community service projects per year (2 in the fall & 2 in the spring).

Northview Engineering Robotics & Science NERDS Club - The NERDS Club is for students in grades 6 – 8 at Northview who are interested in science and engineering. Students in the club complete hands-on science activities and competitive engineering tasks. The students participate in both indoor and outdoor activities to grow their interest in science. Students must have a ride to pick them up at the required time after school.

The State Board of Education has approved the calendar weather waiver for the three Catawba County School Systems (HPS, Catawba and Newton-Conover).
The 2012-13 school year will officially start for students on August 7 with teachers/staff reporting on August 2, 2012

Volunteer Test Proctors Needed for Hickory Public Schools
Only 30 minutes of your time for training—with lunch to boot!
How can you help our schools? Start with just 30 minutes of training during your lunch break (that includes a simple lunch). It’s that easy!
HPS students start their End of Course (EOC) and End of Grade (EOG) testing on May 22nd. Tests will continue through June 7th.
Instructed by Shawn Clemons, HPS director of accountability, the volunteer proctor training is offered on three different dates. Choose ONE of the following schedules for your training: Tuesday, April 24th from 12:15 PM – 12:45 PM Friday, April 27th from 12:15 PM – 12:45 PM Thursday, May 3rd from 12:15 – 12:45 PM
All training will take place in the conference room at the HPS Administrative Services Building, located at 432 4th Avenue SW, Hickory, NC 28602.
