Welcome I am delighted to invite students and parents to the media center. Students will have a library class for one 40-minute period each week. We will be involved in a variety of lessons such as author studies, evaluating books for the state Chioldren's Book Award, research, and learning how to use a library.
Students are faced with a great deal of information in the world and we want to ensure that they know how to organize, use, and present the information they learn. Lessons are based on the North Carolina Information Skills Standard Course of Study.
Library Services Students may check out books each week during their class. They may also visit the library in the mornings as school begins and during other times during the school day as appropriate.
Pre-Kindergarten students are visited in their classroom each week for storytime. They may also check out a book from a selection brought to the classroom. Books will go home in special library book bags, to help students learn about he procedure for caring for books.
The last week of October and the second week of March will be our Book Fairs. Families are invited, but not required, to shop for books and other activities. There is always a nice selection and students find this an exciting event during our school year!
Audio Books & Playaways
We have Playaway audio books available in the collection. Eight titles were purchased last year to see how students responded. Students do need to have parental permission to check these out, as they are expensive to replace. They are essentially an mp3 player with an audio recording of the book. Students check out the book at the same time to read along. Ear buds are available for $1. Permission forms will be available at the circulation desk.
Regular audio books, on cassette, have been collected for several years and will be available for checkout to students for the first time. There are some tape players available to borrow. We ask that students be very responsible with these, but there is no permission required.
Games We are offering a collection of board games for checkout this year. Studnets may borrow games to take home and play with families. Games are being donated to the library. If you have contributions, please bring them in. We're going to enjoy learning some new games this year!
Volunteers Parents and family members are invited to volunteer at the media center. The Book Fair at the end of October and the second week of March are good opportunities to help for just a few hours. Setting the fair up on Monday requires extra hands, and helping children choose books is a fun task.
If you would like to volunteer on a more regular basis, then you can be trained how to put books back on the shelves. This is something that always needs to be done.
Internet Use Students do use the Internet during class and library lessons. We have one computer lab for classes to use. Students are always supervised when using the Internet. Teachers help students learn about websites as resources, how to be responsible when online, and about the responsibilities they have when using the Internet. If you have any questions about computer or Internet use, please contact your student's teacher.
