WELCOME TO 7^TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES WITH MRS. WILSON!

Dear Parents,

= I want to welcome your child to seventh grade social studies. The focus of th= is course is the cultural geography of the non-western world. The areas covered are Africa, Asia and Australia.

I hope = your child will find this class both enlightening and interesting. As with any class, their attention and cooperation will be vital in making this course successful.

Supplies

One three ring binder at least 1 ½ inches = (This will contain Social Studies work only)
Book cover
Loose-leaf notebook paper
Dividers
Colored Pencils
Highlighter
Post-it Notes
White board marker
Storage pouch to hold pencils etc. in the student’s binder

Classroom Rules

I believe = each student in this room is a responsible and capable individual. In order to a= void any misunderstandings, I have several expectations of my students.

1= ) Follow all the rules in the Grandview Student Handbook. This includes no gum or= candy brought into the classroom.

2= ) Treat everyone in the classroom with respect. This includes respecting people and their property.

3= ) Be prepared for class. This includes having your textbook, completed homework,= and all your supplies (pencils, paper, notebook etc.)

4= ) Be in their assigned seat working on the Item of Knowledge when the cla= ss begins. The student is considered tardy if he/she is not in their assigned = seat and working at the beginning of class.

Special Assignments

Each student will also be expected to give a “Current Event” each week. The current event may be a newspaper or magazine article, something heard on a TV or ra= dio program or from the Internet. Car accidents, shootings, drug arrests, or entertainment news will not be accepted. Sports stories are accepted only i= f it is an outstanding event such as the Olympics, world record-breakers etc. Magazines and newspapers are available in the media center.

Homework

Homework will be used to reinforce concepts covered in class as well as to increase the student̵= 7;s sense of responsibility. I anticipate a moderate amount of homework everyday except Friday. Homework is graded on completeness, not accurac= y. A grade of 100 is given if the assignment is complete, 60 if the= re was an attempt made (more then half completed), and an INC (incomplete) if nothing was done.

Please encourage your ch= ild to write all assignments in the planner. Late work is not accepted unless ther= e is a written note from a parent/guardian

Grading

Grades will be computed = as follows: homework 30%, class work 40%, tests and projects 30 %. There will = be many opportunities for success! The school year is divided into four nine-w= eek grading periods. Progress reports will be sent home every three weeks. A si= gned copy is to be returned to me.

Make-up Policy

If your child is absent,= it is his/her responsibility to see me for missed assignment(s). Assignments for the entire week will be posted in the classroom. I will allow three (3) days af= ter the student returns to school to turn in the makeup work. Exceptions to this policy are long term assignments that have been assigned at least a week pr= ior to the absence (Questions of the Week, projects, etc.) I do recognize extenuating circumstances.
