In cases of emergency conditions such as hazardo=
us
weather, a natural disaster, or other emergencies, the following radio and
television stations will broadcast an emergency message:

WSOC Radio FM 103/WSOC TV Channel 9
WHKY Radio AM 1290/WHKY TV Channel 14
It is requested that you tune in to these statio=
ns
for emergency messages and refrain from calling the stations, your school, =
or
the superintendent’s office as this could impede the notification
process. Also, when tuning in=
to
these stations, you should listen for references to school closings, a dela=
yed
opening, or an early dismissal, which specifically
references Hickory Public Schools.
In addition, the HPS website, www.hickoryschools.net
will have up-to-date information on any Hickory Public Schools closing.
For your reference, the following are some, but =
not
all, messages which may be provided through the above-referenced radio and/=
or
television stations and website:
EARLY DISMISSAL =
211;
Alerts parents of the time school will be dismissed during a regular school=
day
due to emergency conditions.
DELAYED OPENING =
211; A
delayed opening, which is usually two hours, is recommended when ice or sno=
w is
in evidence in the early morning but clearing roads and improved weather
conditions are expected. The
delayed opening applies to students.
All personnel should report to work as usual unless notified
otherwise. Breakfast will not=
be
served at school when there is a delayed opening.
NO SCHOOL/TEACHER WORKDAY
– No school for students and child nutrition workers. All other personnel should report =
to
work as usual.
NO SCHOOL –
Students, teachers, teacher assistants, child nutrition workers, and all ot=
her
10-month employees do not report to school/work. All other personnel should report =
to
work as usual.
CLOSED – In t=
he
event of hazardous weather conditions, a natural disaster, or other emergen=
cy,
students and all personnel are not expected to report to school/work. Missed days will be charged as lis=
ted
below.
Note
from the Superintendent:&n=
bsp;
Employees who anticipate problems in transportation should be permit=
ted
to adjust their work schedules in reporting for work, leaving early, or tak=
ing
off the full day in cases of emergency conditions. Time lost will be charged to annual
leave; however, management may arrange schedules whereby employees may be g=
iven
an opportunity to make up time not worked rather than charging it to annual
leave, provided the work week does not exceed forty (40) hours for an emplo=
yee
covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act.&n=
bsp;
Employees who are on pre-arranged annual leave or sick leave will ch=
arge
leave to the appropriate account with no provision for make-up time. In all cases, Custodial, Grounds, =
and
Maintenance personnel should report to work as usual to assist with clearing
walkways, parking lots, and driveways of ice and snow, unless directed not =
to
report to work by their immediate supervisor. &=

policy.
