Fall Fundraiser

Thank you = for your ongoing support and participation in the Fall Fundraiser.  To reward our students for their participation in the Fall Fundraiser the PTA has arranged for two large inflatables to be at the school on Monday, October 31.  Each class will be scheduled a tur= n on the inflatables.  This was an enjoyable event for the students last year and we are looking forward to rewarding the students again this year. Students will be on the inflatables beginning at 8:45 and it is very likely the grass will still be wet with frost.  Tarps will be used to = cover the grass along side of the inflatables, but we ask that dry socks be sent = just in case feet get wet.

Student Performance Dat= a

We strive = to keep our Jenkins community informed of student proficiency data and trends in overall performance.  2010-2011 Reading and Math End of Grade testing results continue to reflect the hard = work of both our students and teachers.  From the chart below you can see that our students continue to exceed both district and state performance scores.  We are equally proud to see a cont= inued increase in overall proficiency in both reading and math.  79.1% of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students scored proficient (a level 3 or 4) in reading, 85.9% of students were proficient in math and 79.4% were proficien= t in science (5th grade only).  Our composite score which accounts for student proficiency in readin= g, math, and science is 81.8%.  <= st1:City w:st=3D"on">Reading and math = data is also measured by the federal No Child Left Behind initiative that analyzes = the same test results by student ethnicity and demographic groups, including economically disadvantage, limited English Proficient, and students in the Exceptional Children’s programs.&nbs= p; This past year, Jenkins had 17 targets to meet among student subgroups.  Our Hispanic stude= nt subgroup did not meet expected proficiency targets indicating a need for continued improvement toward student achievement of this subgroup as we work toward meeting all Adequate Yearly Progress targets for all students.

We are cur= rently in the process of revising our School Improvement Plan for the 2011-2012 sc= hool year.  This process begins with extensive data analysis for school wide performance as = well as grade level and individual classroom performance.  Data drives goal setting and actio= ns steps targeting overall student achievement.  Be looking for an update and notif= ication of a finalized School Improvement Plan to review and stay abreast of our sc= hool wide initiatives.  =

Award’s Day at Je= nkins

Please mar= k your calendars with the dates of our quarterly Award’s Day.  All ceremonies will be held in the gym.  Students will be recogni= zed for their exceptional display of character, academic performance and perfect attendance.  Teachers will send notification to the parents of children who will be recognized at each Awar= d’s Day and your attendance is greatly appreciated by both the teachers and your children.  Come celebrate with= us!

Student Council

 

The Jenkin= s Student Council is beginning to get going for the year.  The classes have all elected their representatives and they had their first meeting on September 28.  We will soon have an election for President, Vice President and Secretary.&n= bsp; The mission of the Student Council is to help our school and our community.  We will have a can= ned food drive in November, a toy drive in December,= and we will make Valentines for residents of a nursing home in February.   In addition, students will be providing community service on the Jenkins school campus to help maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming learning environment. 

 

Battle of the Books

 

Battle of the Books will begin soon for the 2011-2012.  We will have a par= ent meeting for all parents of children who may be interested in being on our <= st1:City w:st=3D"on">Battle of the Books team on Thursday, October 6= th at 6:00 P.M. in our Media= Center.  Parents will learn about the requirements for being on our team.  The children will be responsible for reading 18 books this year.  We will have weekly meetings on Wednesday afternoons.  Our tea= m won the district competition last year and did extremely well at the regional competition.  We are looking f= orward to another great team and lots of fun this year.

Getting off to a Great Start

Being succ= essful at reading is just like learning any other skill. It takes a lot of practic= e! Each year, a student must learn 3000-4000 new words! Your help is very important for your child to become a successful reader. <= /p>

Parents of= ten ask, “What do I need to do to help my child at home?” The number one answer is to read together!  <= st1:City w:st=3D"on">Reading aloud to = your child can be a wonderful parenting experience.  You can read to your child, or your child can read to you. Also, you and your child can take turns reading together. Many loving memories can be created as you share books together. =

Here are s= ome read aloud tips from Literacy Connections.com :

·         Set up a regular time each night. Reading together is a wonderful routine= to help your child prepare for bedtime. Like all habits, this one may take a w= hile to get established, but hang in there until it's a daily (or nightly) routi= ne.

 

·         Try to select an enjoyable group of books your child can choose from. Do they have bright, colorful pictures? Does the language flow in an enjoyable way as you read? Are the stories about topics your child might be interested in? 

·         Remember to keep it fun! Try to allow your child to select the books to be read. Yes, it's hard to read a book for the umpteenth time (We'= ve been there!) but your child will gain a lot from these repeated readings--b= oth emotionally and in preparation for his or her own reading development. = ;

 

·         Another enjoyable activity is telling your own stories! Your children will enjoy the tall tales you make up, or the family stories that = you remember.

 

·         = Be sure to read a book or tell a story together every day!

 

Learning t= o read doesn’t happen magically. Parents and teachers must both play importa= nt roles to develop children’s reading.

Cash – 4 – = Kids, Student Council Fundraiser

We are exc= ited about continuing our Cash-4-Kids fundraiser.  This is a simple recycling project= that pays without the extended cost to our families.   Cash-4-Kids provides our community the opportunity to save their empty inkjet/toner cartridges a= nd retired cell phones to raise money.  We will use the funds raised from these recycled items to purchase n= ew ink cartridges for our classroom printers.=   As an added bonus, these items will be recycled instead of them being thrown in our landfills.

 = ;

Your place= of employment could be a great source of collecting cartridges and retired cell phones and can participate by sponsoring Jenkins Elementary. (Sponsor forms= can be picked up in the office.)  Normally, community businesses use these cartridges in printers, fax machines, and desktop copiers, and are updating and changing cell phones and can help by pledging these items to our school.  Once again, it doesn’t cost = them anything; they are recycling, and helping our children raise money for need= ed supplies.  What a great way to contribute!
