Mark Your Calendars – Change in the 2011-12 School Calendar In order to facilitate the administration of the ACT, March 6, 2011 is now an instructional day for students. March 9, 2011 is now a required professional development day for teachers.

Welcoming Dr. Hart
The Public is Invited—Welcome Reception for Dr. Hart! Hickory Public Schools is hosting a “Welcome Reception” for Dr. Walter Hart, the newly selected HPS Superintendent. While Dr. Hart will not officially begin his duties until November 1st, 2011, HPS is providing the community a chance to welcome Dr. Hart and his family to the Hickory area. The “drop-in” reception will be held on Thursday, September 29th, from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM at the HPS Administrative Services Building, 432 4th Avenue, SW, Hickory, NC 28602. 1st-5th Grade Assignment Letters
Letters will be mailed on Tuesday, August 9th. Each letter is stamped with a "Do Not Forward" label. If you have moved and have not notified the school, please let us know so that we can verify your address.

Kindergarten Assignment Letters
Kindergarten assignment letters will be mailed on Tuesday, August 9th. This letter states the Staggered Start Day for your child. If you do not receive your letter by Thursday, August 11th, please check with the school to make sure that you have registered.

5th Grade Supply List
• Pencil Erasers Class Use: • Red ink pens for checking Boxes of tissues • Spiral notebook (3 subject) Colored Markers • Spiral notebook (5 subject) Hand Sanitizer • Plastic or wooden 12”/30 cm ruler Sanitizing Wipes • Clipboard Pencils • 2” 3 ring binder Ziploc bags (asst. sizes) • Zipper Pencil Pouch Loose-leaf notebook paper • Dividers 4x6 Index Cards • Highlighters Red Ink Pens • 4x6 Index cards (2 pks. 100) Asst. Highlighters Book bags on wheels are discouraged. They cause problems when going up steps, on the bus, and are too large for cubbies. Please use backpacks.

4th Grade Supply List
• 2” 3-ring binder to hold assignments and student planner • 1 package of dividers for the binder • Notebook paper (Your child will need more paper as the year goes on.) • Pencils (Your child will need more pencils as the year goes on.) • Pencil sharpener that catches shavings • Three spiral notebooks (70 – 100 pages) • Colored pencils or crayons and one highlighter Optional items to be shared in the classroom: • Boxes of tissue • Band-aids • Quart and Gallon size Zip-Loc bags PLEASE , NO PENCIL BOXES- they do not fit in the desks. 3rd Grade Supply List
• Zipper pencil pouch • 3 packs loose leaf notebook paper (wide ruled) • No. 2 pencils (Please do not bring mechanical pencils.) • Highlighters • 4 pack of skinny dry erase markers • 2 – 2 pocket folders • 1 inch 3 ring binder for planner and homework • One red grading pens to grade papers in class • 2 Boxes of tissues for class to use

2nd Grade Supply List
Items to be shared with class: • Wide ruled notebook paper • Large pkg. of #2 pencils • 2 boxes of tissues • 1 box of eraser tops for pencils • Band-aids • Baggies (quart or gallon size) (BOYS BRING) • Baby wipes (GIRLS BRING) • Hand sanitizer (pump bottle) • Dry erase markers Individual items: • Highlighter – (any color) • Small zipper pouch to store crayons and pencils (no boxes please) • One folder with inside pockets • Glue sticks • Pack of Crayons • #2 pencils • Pencil grippers (if needed) • 2 spiral notebooks • NO BOOKBAGS ON WHEELS • NO LARGE NOTEBOOKS • NO MECHANICAL PENCILS OR PENS

• Glue sticks • Markers (washable) • Ziploc bags (no snack size please) • Kleenex tissue • The school provides glue bottles, scissors, 8-pack crayons; additional crayon colors are up to the parent. • Bottle of Hand Sanitizer • One towel / blanket for rest time • Backpack (not on wheels) • Disinfecting wipes

Summer Office Hours
The school is open from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday during the summer. We will start back on a Monday through Friday schedule on August 15th. If you have moved into our district, please contact the school to register.
