Mark Your Calendars – Change in the 2011-12 School Calendar
In order to facilitate the administration of the ACT, March 6, 2011 is now an instructional day for students.  March 9, 2011 is now a required professional development day for teachers. 
 
Welcoming Dr. Hart
The Public is Invited—Welcome Reception for Dr. Hart!
Hickory Public Schools is hosting a “Welcome Reception” for Dr. Walter Hart, the newly selected HPS Superintendent. While Dr. Hart will not officially begin his duties until November 1st, 2011, HPS is providing the community a chance to welcome Dr. Hart and his family to the Hickory area. The “drop-in” reception will be held on Thursday, September 29th, from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM at the HPS Administrative Services Building, 432 4th Avenue, SW, Hickory, NC 28602. 1st-5th Grade Assignment Letters
Letters will be mailed on Tuesday, August 9th.  Each letter is stamped with a "Do Not Forward" label.  If you have moved and have not notified the school, please let us know so that we can verify your address.   
Kindergarten Assignment Letters
Kindergarten assignment letters will be mailed on Tuesday, August 9th.  This letter states the Staggered Start Day for your child.  If you do not receive your letter by Thursday, August 11th, please check with the school to make sure that you have registered.

• 2” 3-ring binder to hold assignments and student planner
• 1 package of dividers for the binder
• Notebook paper (Your child will need more paper as the year goes on.)
• Pencils (Your child will need more pencils as the year goes on.)
• Pencil sharpener that catches shavings
• Three spiral notebooks (70 – 100 pages)
• Colored pencils or crayons and one highlighter

Summer Office Hours
The school is open from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday during the summer.  We will start back on a Monday through Friday schedule on August 15th.  If you have moved into our district, please contact the school to register.
