What's Going On In Library Classes?

Fifth grade students are completing a study on U.S. states and capitals. Each student is preparing a "suitcase" covered with decorative and informative, student-made, travel stickers from one state. All 50 will be on display soon. The product and full research/citation documents are due the first full week of December.  Check your child's rubric to ensure his/her project is submitted on time!

All students in library information skills classes are getting acquainted with the picture books and novels that are nominated for the NC Children's Book Award.  This is a prestigious honor bestowed on a lucky author and/or illustrator from each category chosen only by the school children in NC.  Only students can nominate books and only students can vote!  This year's list can be found on the following site: http//www.ncslma.org; click on "book competitions"; go to NCCBA.

Last year's winners!

Recently students have been getting acquainted with all of the new nonfiction books that have been purchased with monies from the LSTA Grant and the generous match from Hickory Public Schools.

As always, students are learning how to care for books, how to locate resources in the media center, and how to select and evaluate what to read, Please encourage your child to take good care of our library books.  They belong to the entire Oakwood community and they are expensive and, sometimes, impossible to replace.  I have taught that a library book should remain in the student's backpack until the child is ready to read; then, the book should be returned to the bag.  It should never be around foods, beverages, younger children, and/or pets. Thank you for reinforcing this instruction.
