Will the winter weat= her ever end?  Let’s hope that w= e saw the last round for this school year at the beginning of March.  We still have another day to be m= ade up and that should be announced in the upcoming weeks.  This could change some of our dat= es below, but you will be notified if it does.   

 

Thank you to all of = you who are getting the word out about having parents of students that will be ent= ering Kindergarten for the 2010-11 school year call us to register.  We are generating quite a list.  Students must be 5 on or before August 31st, 2010 in order to attend Kindergarten.  Please con= tinue to spread the word, especially to those who may be attending Oakwood for t= he first time.  This helps in pl= anning for the next school year.  I = know that I have received some calls and have taken some “future Blue Jays” on a school tour already for the upcoming school year. 

 

We really do appreci= ate the phone calls in the morning to let us know that your child is sick.  This is a great form of communica= tion and teachers can set aside the information that the child missed that day.=   However, I need to remind you tha= t a note is still needed when your child returns to school.  This note helps us to determine w= hether an absence is excused or unexcused.  If a note is not sent in, the absence will automatically remain UNEXCUSED.  These notes are w= ritten documentation of why your child was not in school and are kept on file.  Thanks!

 

I want to thank ever= yone for their support with Jump Rope for Heart.&n= bsp; While I don’t have the final figures to report to you, I know= that Coach D. appreciates everyone helping with this initiative.  It is such a great feeling to kno= w what caring students we have at Oakwood!

 

As we are getting cl= ose to the end of this year, I know some parents start to think about the upcoming year and child placement.  In= the past, parent letters have been sent to the school regarding this matter.  Beginning April 12th, = there will be a form to fill out to replace these letters.  You may pick one up in the office= if you are interested.  This form wi= ll require you to list your child’s strengths and areas of concern.  ANY FORM RETURNED WITH A SPECIFIC TEACHER LISTED WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. 

 

Parents who drive th= eir children to school or allow their children to walk to school, I need your help.  Some students are gett= ing to school too early.  Remember, students can begin arriving to school at 8:00.  This is when we have an adult tha= t is on duty to watch the children.  = We are also having some problems between 8:00-8:15.  There have been times in which I = have addressed my concerns with the children, but some of the same things continue.  Students are start= ing to get very loud and are chasing each other and playing around.  I am afraid someone is going to g= et hurt.  Please talk with your = child about waiting patiently and not playing around.  The doors open at 8:15 for childr= en to go to their classroom.  Also,= students who are car riders and need to eat breakfast may go to the cafeteria at 8:= 00.  Students arriving after 8:20 that= are car riders will not be permitted to go down and have breakfast.  Please plan accordingly.

On March 17th and 18th, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will participate in a prac= tice EOG simulation.  Although thi= s is just a practice test, please stress to your child to take this seriously.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  The teachers and I would like to = get a good picture of how well your child is doing.  We are very fortunate that we hav= e the opportunity to do this simulation because this will allow students to see a very similar format to the real End of Grade Tests that they will take in May.  When we score this test= , we will only be able to calculate a percentage of questions that students ans= wered correctly.  This is not the s= ame as on the EOG, but we do not have the capabilities of scoring it any other way.  The results will remain= with the teachers, just like all of the practice tests that we have done in the past.  Teachers will use the = results to locate areas in which your child will need extra practice.

 

Congratulations to o= ur Oakwood Science Olympiad Team.  The 13 students that participated did a great job of representing the school.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  The competition was held on Satur= day, March 6th at = Lenoir Rhyne University.  Thank you to all our coaches and volunteers for working so hard with the team.
