HPS Third Graders Receive Dictionaries From Kiwanis Club

Miss Gibsons’ 3rd grade students: Cameron Sherrill, Kara Byrd, Isaac Hughes, Airen Jones, Sydney Brown, and Fernando Perez from Viewmont Elementary School.

Hickory Kiwanis Club recently purchased 433 dictionaries which were distributed to all the 3rd graders in Hickory Public Schools. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. This is the 5th year the Kiwanis club members participated in The Dictionary Project.

Across the nation, over 12,126,966 children have received a dictionary thanks to the generosity of community sponsors who have participated in The Dictionary Project. The goal of the program is to assist all students in completing the school year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers by providing students with their own personal dictionary.

The sponsors of The Dictionary Project get involved to improve literacy and the quality of life in their communities. The volunteers in the Hickory Kiwanis Club hope to effect change and improve education so that the Hickory children will grow up better prepared to compete in the global economy.
