Hickory’s Chisholm signs to play Averett football

A.J. Chisholm will be heading to Averett University in Danville, Virginia to play football this fall. A senior at Hickory High school, Chisholm is excited about being a part of the Averett campus life. “It’s a beautiful campus and I believe I will be a part of something great that will help me to become a better man,” said Chisholm.

Chisholm plans to work out with his high school football team this spring and summer in preparation for the start of the university season. “My university football coach is Cleive Adams and I look forward to learning under his coaching leadership at Averett, where I will become one of the ‘Cougars,’” said Chisholm.

With plans to pursue a major in business, Chisholm looks forward to gaining the higher education and eventually obtaining a successful career journey.   According to Chisholm, who has played football since he was six years old, the sport has contributed to teaching him to set goals along his journey. “I have played a lot of different positions and through every position and challenge, I have learned that even if you’re behind, you have to keep going hard, going forward,” he said.

“My strengths have been in defending and running to the ball—as I have good speed for my size,” said Chisholm. “Coach Stone taught me how to go hard at all times while teaching me the basics and fundamentals.”

“A.J. has been a special part of Hickory High football for four years,” said HHS Head Football Coach, Russell Stone. “He has a special knack for being in the right place at the right time.  I am very grateful to A.J. for his help in my transition, the fourth head coach during his high school football career.

“I asked A.J. to change positions and sacrifice to make the 2018 Red Tornadoes winners. Whether he was making a key sack, forcing a fumble, blocking a kick, or throwing a block, A.J. was a key part of the exciting turn around Hickory High football experienced last fall. I am anxious to see A.J. grow as a player and as a man at Averett University. I am so happy to see him get this opportunity!” added Stone.

“Some of my greatest memories include beating Alexander Central—as the school was ranked the number three team in the state at the time,” said Chisholm . “We also beat West Caldwell for our homecoming game. And I enjoyed playing with my brothers for the last time. I really credit my teammates, my coaches and all our Tornado fans for a great season and finale to my senior year of playing football,” he said.

Born and raised in Hickory, Chisholm is a product of Hickory Public Schools—all through his years. He enjoys science and math the most, and believes Joseph Edwards, who heads up Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) has been very supportive.

“My mom, Angela Farris, has always provided everything she could for me so I could be successful in sports,” said Chisholm. “And my dad, Alfonso Chisholm taught me about everything I know that has to do with sports. I’m just very excited to make my family and friends proud. I want to make an impact at Averett—and I thank everybody who believed in me and encouraged me to be the best I can be!”

Congratulations to A.J. Chisholm!
