May 16 -- Closed to HPS students

May 16 -- Closed to HPS students
Posted on 05/10/2018

Hickory Public Schools will be closed to students and operate as an optional teacher workday on Wednesday, May 16, 2018.

The closing of school is based on the high number of HPS teachers who plan to attend the statewide rally in Raleigh, referred to as “The March for Students and Rally for Respect.”

According to HPS Superintendent, Dr. Robbie Adell, who announced the decision to close school on Wednesday, May 16, the number of HPS teachers who have requested time away from their classroom to attend the rally expands beyond the number of available substitute teachers.

“Hickory Public Schools will not need to make-up this closed day,” said Adell.

While May 16 will be closed to students, the International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) testing will continue as scheduled at the high schools.  A confirmation of the testing schedule will be announced from the high schools. All IB and AP tests will continue as previously scheduled for students on May 16.

Additionally, all HPS transportation, teacher assistants, and cafeteria employees will receive notification from their supervisors regarding work options for Wednesday, May 16.

Kid Connection at Viewmont Elementary will be open on Wednesday, May 16.

“School will resume to the regular schedule on Thursday, May 17, 2018,” said Adell.
