Sigmon Announced as

New Principal

for Southwest Primary

HICKORY…  Effective July 1, 2019, Erin S. Sigmon will serve as the new principal for Southwest Primary School. The school is currently led by interim principal, Dr. Jennifer Cash.

An educator serving North Carolina public schools since 1998, Sigmon’s most recent role has been with Southwest Primary, serving as Intervention Support. In this position, Sigmon has led intervention for “at-risk” students and chaired various leadership teams for school improvement, registration, and academic support.

She has been instrumental in school operations and building relations with school families. In addition, her professional peers at Southwest Primary nominated her as the school’s representative for the 2019 Rotary’s Wilmer Jenkins Teacher of the Year Award.

Prior to joining Southwest Primary, Sigmon served Northview Middle School as the Curriculum Assistance Teacher, overseeing educational plans, teaching at-risk students and even taking the time to lead the school’s BETA club.

From 1998 to 2013, Sigmon was employed with Newton-Conover City Schools where she served Newton-Conover Middle School and Newton-Conover High School.

Sigmon’s responsibilities in service to Newton-Conover City Schools covered a wide spectrum from records management and EC chair to working with counselors at the Department of Social Services. She actively led scheduling, managed attendance, led the placement for the Teen-Up Program, tracked performance data, conducted observations, and worked in various evaluation/committee leadership roles. Sigmon has always served as a mentor to beginning teachers—and even seasoned teachers.

A professional educator who specializes in assisting students with learning challenges, Sigmon carries an excellent rapport with students, families, and colleagues. Additionally, she has served as a volleyball coach and yearbook advisor—rounding out the extracurricular demands in education.

“Upon my arrival to Hickory Public Schools in 2013, I was given many opportunities to be a teacher leader and use my recently acquired administrative degree,” said Sigmon. “Challenges arrive each and every day as we work to build, serve, and grow Southwest Primary. We succeed through facing each day as ‘One Team with One Goal.’  I am able to work with students and families through a wide range of needs—whether it’s social, emotional, or struggles with the academics. This supportive resolve comes through working with a strong staff that embraces each situation head on – implementing a plan of success,” she said.

Sigmon earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from Appalachian State University and she earned her Master’s Degree in Executive Leadership from Gardner-Webb University. The daughter of Ted and Anna Carol Spencer, Erin is married to Kevin Sigmon and they are the parents of two children. “When my father passed in 1997, it became my goal to live each day to the fullest and make sure that everyone who crossed my path knew they mattered just like my father made sure that everyone in his life knew they mattered. Good lessons for a life-long journey.”

So with moving into her new role at Southwest Primary, Sigmon plans to keep that same spirit alive: “My goal is to help lead Southwest to be the best it can be remembering that each student matters. Every child that enters our doors has the ability to do and be something amazing. We just have to help them reach their fullest potential and know that nothing is impossible. We can do this—together!” said Sigmon.
