A message from Superintendent Adell:

March 3, 2020

Hickory Public Schools is aware of the growing concern across the nation of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and the potential impact on our school district. While there are no confirmed cases of the COVID-19 in North Carolina (at publishing time of this post), Hickory Public Schools is following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Catawba County Public Health Department. According to Catawba County Public Health, the immediate risk to most Americans is low. However, Hickory Public Schools is working to be proactive by communicating with principals and staff any new information, increasing the level of cleaning and disinfecting in each school, monitoring the CDC website and increasing communication with the Catawba County Health Department.

Daily cleaning and disinfecting of each school is being conducted by our cleaning staff. In addition to the current cleaning protocol, the staff will be disinfecting student desktops, door knobs, handrails and floors using EPA approved products. The team will also be using the EPA approved product for a focused cleaning in common spaces such as cafeterias, media centers, and school offices. The school bus drivers will be conducting nightly cleanings of each school bus with the approved products.

The CDC recommends the following preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases:
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Stay home when you are sick. If your child has a fever, he/she should be fever-free for 24 hours prior to returning to school.

Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Additional information about hand-washing can be found at this link: https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/

Hickory Public Schools will continue to communicate with the Catawba County Department of Public Health and the CDC for continued guidance and monitor student absences.
