Coronavirus Update from Hickory Public Schools

Online Learning & Education Packets

To All HPS Families:

Hickory Public Schools is moving forward through unchartered waters.  We thank you for your patience and your partnership as we work to support you—our families, while providing the most up-to-date information.

According to HPS Assistant Superintendent, Dr. La’Ronda Whiteside, our district leadership team has met with HPS principals on several occasions. “Our teachers and administrators have collaborated for days in preparation for adapting to new modes of learning for our students.

“It’s important for families to realize that they are not expected to take on the extraordinary task of fulfilling their child’s academic needs; but family support is sincerely appreciated as we provide resources to their children,” said Whiteside.

Teachers have worked diligently to create engaging lessons for students. Suggested lessons may include:

  • Paper or online material
  • Instructional videos
  • Fun activities/packets
  • Suggested readings
  • Tips for at-home learning

**Resources and updates for students, parents and guardians will be shared through district/school websites and teacher/classroom pages. Remote learning packets may be available for PreK – 12th grade students.

To view all online learning for each of our nine schools, click on the following link (below)--and then click on your designated school (s).  Each school is providing the online assignments from teachers. You will notice your child's teacher(s) and the online assignment/remote learning plans. Should you have any questions, email the teachers or call the school. You may need to leave a message and thank you for your patience as we work through this method of communication.

Thanks to our community partners and K-64, our students at the middle and high school level are able to use their district-issued Chromebooks to access lessons through our learning management system (Canvas), if they have internet availability.

**With regards to our high school students who are taking courses with CVCC or LRU:

We are suggesting that students be creative with this special time away from school by sticking to a schedule. It’s important to balance family engagements, fun activities, and structured learning to maximize quality time.

We believe in public education. We believe in our staff and faculty. We believe in our families. And most importantly, we believe in our students. Their quality of education and life is the very reason we serve in education. We want the best for all students—and we thank YOU for your support during this challenging time.

Please stay healthy and safe.
