English Learners
Hickory City Schools uses a content-based English as a second language model to assist English language learners in becoming fully proficient in English. North Carolina has adopted the World Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) English language develoopment standards. Students are assessed when they initially enter HCS and then once annually until they meet required exit criteria.
Our English as a Second Language (ESL) program, spanning from kindergarten to twelfth grade, is designed to offer tailored learning experiences that celebrate students' home languages and cultures.
In our ESL classes, students are provided with targeted instruction to develop their language acquisition skills, encompassing reading, writing, listening, and speaking. These classes are appropriately leveled to cater to students' proficiency levels.
