High School
Hickory City Schools offers two enriching high school pathways, empowering students to excel academically, develop career-ready skills, and explore their passions. Students enrolled at either high school have the unique opportunity to take classes at both, maximizing their educational experience.
At Hickory High, a traditional high school, students benefit from rigorous academics, strong athletics, a diverse arts program that includes the county’s only orchestra, and the Advanced Placement (AP) Academy—a challenging program that develops college-level skills, awards an extra quality point, and requires service hours and commitment to academic integrity.
Hickory Career & Arts Magnet (HCAM), our magnet high school, welcomes students from Catawba County and surrounding areas and provides access to unique academies such as computer programming, criminal justice, culinary arts, graphics & photography, health sciences, performing arts, and visual arts. Both schools encourage academic growth and career preparation through engaging programs and hands-on learning opportunities.
Students at both high schools can enhance their academic journey with dual enrollment in the Lenoir-Rhyne High School Scholars Academy, where they can earn college credits and experience college-level coursework in a supportive high school setting. The Catawba Valley Community College Career and College Promise (CCP) program offers pathways for high school students to take college classes that align with their career interests or earn credits toward an associate’s degree, giving students a head start on their college education or career training.
For those interested in practical career experience, the Catawba Apprenticeship Network provides valuable opportunities for students to engage in paid apprenticeships with local industries, gaining hands-on skills and a pathway to future careers. Additionally, our Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses offer a range of options from technology to healthcare, where students can build specialized skills. Through internships and job shadowing experiences, students can also explore real-world careers and gain insights into future professions.
A unique benefit of our district is that students may take courses at both high schools, Hickory High and HCAM, even if they are enrolled at just one, allowing them to access a wide array of courses and specialized programs. Through these diverse offerings, Hickory City Schools equips students to thrive academically, develop their talents, and confidently pursue their future paths.
